JOUR-2620  Media Writing I

This course introduces students to media writing based the journalistic principles of accuracy, clarity, brevity, balance and objectivity. Students will also be introduced to the Associated Press Stylebook and the legal and ethical responsibility of media writing. A laboratory component provides students with a hands-on experience in media writing skills. (WC)

JOUR-3225  Publication Practicum I  
(2 credits)  (Both Fall & Spring Semesters)  
This course provides laboratory work on "The Circuit" student news and "Raven" yearbook. Students will also receive experience in social media management and web content management. Students put in action the process of developing, reporting, editing, photographing and publishing for a converged media newsroom. Students meet weekly with a faculty adviser to address organizational and production issues. Publications practicums are open to all students, regardless of major.
Prerequisite(s): JOUR-2620.  
JOUR-3300  Media Writing II  
(3 credits)  (Both Fall & Spring Semesters)  
This course is an extension of Media Writing I and provides additional, more in-depth application of the different styles of writing for print, broadcast, online, advertising, persuasion, public relations, multimedia storytelling and social media. While journalistic writing serves as the foundation for this class, the focus is on writing for multiple media formats and audiences. (WC)

JOUR-3350  Copy Editing  
(1 credit)  (Spring Semester)  
Copy editing is the process of reviewing writing to make it concise and consistent with the goal of improving readability. The concepts explored in this class include mechanics, grammar, word choice and the use of the Associated Press Stylebook. Students will learn to edit copy using quick and deep-editing techniques. The skills learned in this course are applicable all forms of writing, not just journalism. This course is open to all majors.
JOUR-3370  Multimedia Storytelling

This course explores the design of nonfiction stories using a combination of text, audio, video, interactive elements, photographs, infographics, and graphics. The course introduces the process of creating engaging narratives across multiple platforms using traditional and digital media formats. The course focuses on multiple applications including journalism, public relations, advertising, social media and general communication.

This course examines techniques for in-depth investigations and analysis, such as use of documents, multiple sources, surveys, content analysis, and participant observation.

JOUR-4340  Feature Writing

This course examines storytelling methods often used in fiction writing as applied to longer, more detailed stories for newspapers and magazines. Stories made available to campus publications.

JOUR-4750  Media Law  
(3 credits)  (Discretion of Department)  
Students will examine key areas of media law, including the rule of law, the Constitution and First Amendment, copyright and intellectual property, defamation, privacy, and related topics. Through case studies and critical analysis, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the complex balance between law, government restrictions and the rights of citizens. Students will also explore current legal challenges in digital media, social networks, and emerging technologies.

Independent study courses include tutorials and directed readings. These courses allow students to explore other areas and issues of the media. Meetings are arranged at the discretion of the instructor. Requires prior approval of department chair and pre-approved contract of educational goals.
