Students put in action the process of story development, reporting, editing, photography, and publishing for a converged media newsroom. This course introduces students to media writing based the journalistic principles of accuracy, clarity, brevity, balance and objectivity. Students will also be introduced to the Associated Press Stylebook and the legal and ethical responsibility of media writing. A laboratory component provides students with a hands-on experience in media writing skills. (WC)

Students meet weekly with a faculty adviser to address organizational and production issues. Publications practicums are open to all students, regardless of major.
This course is an extension of Media Writing I and provides additional, more in-depth application of the different styles of writing for print, broadcast, online, advertising, persuasion, public relations, multimedia storytelling and social media. While journalistic writing serves as the foundation for this class, the focus is on writing for multiple media formats and audiences. Pre-requisite: JOUR-2620. (WC)
Copy editing is the process of reviewing writing to make it concise and consistent with the goal of improving readability. The concepts explored in this class include mechanics, grammar, word choice and the use of the Associated Press Stylebook. Students will learn to edit copy using quick and deep-editing techniques. The skills learned in this course are applicable all forms of writing, not just journalism. This course is open to all majors.
This course explores the design of nonfiction stories using a combination of text, audio, video, interactive elements, photographs, infographics, and graphics. The course introduces the process of creating engaging narratives across multiple platforms using traditional and digital media formats. The course focuses on multiple applications including journalism, public relations, advertising, social media and general communication. Pre-requisite: JOUR-2620.

This course examines storytelling methods often used in fiction writing as applied to longer, more detailed stories for newspapers and magazines. Stories made available to campus publications.
This course examines the legal and ethical principles that guide modern mass media producers and organizations. This course introduces students to the major areas of media law. Case studies are used to examine the application of media law in situations that students might face in the workforce. Media ethics is studied from the philosophical foundation of major ethical systems. In both media law and ethics, the major emphasis of the course is on the application of applied principles and decision-making.

Independent study courses include tutorials and directed readings. These courses allow students to explore other areas and issues of the media. Meetings are arranged at the discretion of the instructor. Requires prior approval of department chair and pre-approved contract of educational goals.
